I remember when my small son was born very well. I was naturally apprehensive. Would he have ten fingers and toes? Would he be okay? Would he be breathing fine? Would he do well on his Apgar test? The concerns every new parent has. Sadly, in the United States and around the world, there are children who find themselves suffering from horrific genetic illness, cancer and other catastrophic medical conditions from the moment they are born or at some point in their young lives .

If there is a more noble cause than helping small children overcome cancer, I’m at a loss as to what it would be. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was established in 1962 in Memphis, Tennessee by Danny Thomas and continues to carry out its core mission to this day; helping innocent children with terrible illnesses without concern for cost or ability to pay. I looked over the most recent accounting overview of St. Jude and about 81 cents of every dollar given ends up going to patient care or research. It takes roughly 2.8 million dollars a day to care for all the patients at St. Jude, none of whom are asked to pay anything. Obviously an organization such as St. Jude that continues to grow rapidly incurs suspicion, …. are your donations actually going to help the kids or fund some CEO’s third vacation home? As best I am able to tell, St. Jude is the real deal. Your money actually reaches the children and the researchers who study their illnesses. And if one more little one gets to see their next birthday because of your cash, … the entire world is enriched.

If you’ve gotten a bonus recently at work, or a promotion, or things have gone your way recently and you find a jingle in your pocket, consider a donation to St. Jude if you can:

Thanks to many millions of donations, there are a multitude of wonderful people alive today who would not have been 50 years ago. Let’s work to see that tradition continued!
